Amateur singers are invited to record a cassette tape or CD singing a song that meets this year's theme - "Jersey Days and Country Nights". . It must be an a cappella (no musical accompaniment) recording for the preliminary round. If you make it to the finals, you will be able to sing live with your recorded music but not for the audition entry. At the finals, if you are selected, you may sing a different song from the approved category if possible then you sang for the preliminary competition on Friday night. That is your choice. Your preliminary and final songs may also be different from your audition recording. The song must be no longer than 3 1/2 minutes in length. 2. Note that we do not want the same song sung by more than one performer. Therefore you must select the song or songs you will perform at the competition in advance after you have been advised of your acceptance into the competition and no later that the first meeting of participants on Sunday, Oct. 5. Song selections must be emailed to festival@deerfieldtownship.org . Songs will be accepted on a first-received basis. This means the first person to select a song will be the only contestant permitted to sing that song. This also means that you may not change your song once it have been chosen and accepted. 3. Complete the idol contest entry form. Additional forms are available at the Deerfield Township Municipal Building or may be requested by mail, email – festival@deerfieldtownship.org or via the web – www.deerfieldtownship.org. 4. Submit the recording of you singing your song without musical accompaniment and the entry form to the Deerfield Township Municipal Building by 4 PM on September 22. Entry form and recording must be received in the municipal building by that deadline. You may deliver it to the municipal building, Monday to Friday, 9 AM to 4 PM . If you mail it, be sure to do so in advance so the mail reaches the building by the deadline. The building is located on Landis Avenue in Rosenhayn , NJ, 1.5 blocks west of Morton Avenue . Deerfield Recreation Committee will review all entries and select no more than eight in each age category to go to the preliminary show which will take place, live at the Harvest Festival on Friday, Oct. 10. The selections will be posted to www.deerfieldtownship.org by September 29 at 10 PM. A written notice will follow to all those chosen to be in the preliminary competition, providing the rules, procedures and schedules for the preliminary competition and for the finals. That notice is available at the bottom of this page. 6. Contestants selected for the preliminary competition will be required to attend one rehearsal meeting on Sunday, October 5, 4 PM at the festival stage in Rosenhayn. and be available to sing before a panel of judges in front of the festival audience on Friday, Oct. 10 beginning at 6:30 PM. The top 3 finalists in each age category will be required to perform for judges and festival audience at the finals show on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 1 PM. 7. Preliminary judging on Oct. 10 will be done by three independent, judges with knowledge of entertainment. Only positive comments will be made during the event. No contestant will be criticized. 3 finalists in each age category will be selected by the judges to participate in the finals on Oct. 12. Participants will be judged as follows: a. Vocal performance – voice and tone quality, beat, melody and lyrics. b. Stage Presence – poise, performance, appearance. c. Overall performanace. 8. All contestants must attend one meeting / rehearsals on Sunday, October 5, 4 PM at the festival grounds near Rosenhayn Fire Hall. Report to the stage area adjacent to Rosenhayn Fire Hall on Morton Avenue in Rosenhayn. Contestants under 18 must be accompanied to the rehearsal and the contest by a parent or guardian. 9. Bring the music for the song you have chosen with you to the rehearsal. Provide it on CD or cassette tape. Make sure the CD or tape is labeled with the name of the song and your name. It must be a musical accompaniment recording and not a recording with another artist’s voice. You may also choose to sing without musical accompaniment. You may also accompany yourself with a musical instrument that you play and supply. You may not change your song or songs after you have emailed them to the festival and they have been accepted and you may not change your song after the first rehearsal. You must leave the CD or tape with the festival idol committee at the first rehearsal. 10. Rehearsals are not dress rehearsals so you may come casual. No judging will be done at the rehearsals. 11. You must sing a song that fits our theme. It does not have to be the same song you auditioned with. The song should be no longer than 3 1/2 minutes in length. 12. Please bring a 2 or 3 sentence introduction for yourself to the first rehearsal or send it by email to festival@deerfieldtownship.org prior to the rehearsal. This should be typed or very neatly hand written. Include name, hometown, school, other experience, future goals, other items of interest. 13. Bring a copy of a photo or two of yourself to the rehearsal if you have them. You may also email the photo in advance to festival@deerfieldtownship.org. We will also be taking photos at the rehearsal for use at the contest and for publicity purposes. 14. We will use the rehearsal to check the quality of the recording you bring with you and to familiarize you with the stage and the procedures for Friday night. You will be asked to sing a minute or less of your song to ensure that it works. 15. We may also ask all performers sing a song as a group at the beginning or end of the contest. The lyrics and the music will be available at the rehearsal. Your cooperation will be appreciated. We will keep this as easy as possible. 15. All contestants who are notified that are in the preliminary round, must report to the stage by 5:45 PM on Friday, Oct 10. Since our full lighting and sound system will not be completed until Friday, all contestants must be at the Festival on Friday evening by 5:45 PM to allow for a quick run through with each contestant and their music using the actual full sound system and lighting prior to the contest at 6:30 PM. INFORMATION FOR THOSE CHOSEN FOR THE FINALS COMPETITIONNote that this information is for those who are selected as finalists to appear in the finals competition on Sunday, Oct. 121. The top-three contestants in each age category will return for the finals on Sunday, Oct.12 at the festival at 1 PM. They are required to report to the stage by 12:30 PM on Oct. 12. The CD or audio tape of the song they will sing at the finals must be provided to the idol committee either Friday night right after the closing of the preliminary show or no later than Saturday before or immediately after the Festival parade. 2. At the finals, if you are selected as a finalist, you may sing a different song that fits our theme then you sang for the preliminary competition on Friday night or you may sing the same song. Your song for the preliminary competition may be the same as or different from your audition recording. The song must be no longer than 3 1/2 minutes in length. 3. The finals will be judged by the 3 preliminary judges plus two new independent judges. 4. All finalists should be prepared to participate in the festival parade on Saturday. Oct. 11 at noon. Contestants are to report to the parade staging area at Deerfield Township School by 11:30 AM on Oct. 11. A professional float with a sound system will be provided for the finalists and they will be asked to sing their winning preliminary songs along the parade route. Deerfield Township Recreation Committee reserves the right to amend the rules and to change dates and procedures as needed. All decisions of the Recreation Committee and its judges are final.
